In 1972, George Wallace runs for the Democratic party's nomination and wins. He faces off against Richard Nixon in the General Election. Who wins? Discuss with maps.

Would Wallace not be a little more competitive in the Mid-West? I always thought that he was strongest base outside the South.

I would imagine a left-wing third party in an election like this anyway.

I dont even think Wallace does that well in the South, as Nixon was pretty popular there by 1972. Id say this would be map:

Nixon 512
Wallace 26

I think many Wallace voters from 68 support Nixon and 3/5 of Humphrey Voters vote for Nixon .

475: Richard Nixon/Spiro Agnew - 55.6%
63: George Wallace/George Smathers - 36.0%
Walter Washington/Myles Horton - 7.7%
Others - 0.7%

Washington almost won D. C., to be clear.

Best case scenario for Wallace:

Nixon wins the Electoral College 363-175 and wins the Popular Vote 56-44%.
More realistic map:

Nixon wins the Electoral College 483-55 and wins the Popular Vote 62-36%.

Best case scenario for Wallace would probably include winning Michigan.
