House Minority Leader Richard Gephardt of Missouri defeats Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee in a close 2000 Democratic presidential nomination battle. Gephardt makes up with Gore, and picks a relative liberal, New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Sheheen to attract female voters and more centrist Gore/Clinton voters. He faces off against Texas Gov. George W. Bush, who is the scion of the Republican blue-blood establishment.

2000 map, except

Gephardt + MO, NH
Bush +OR, NM
Florida still goes down to the wire, SCOTUS rules in favor of Bush so no further recount.

Gephardt pulls through with 270 - Bush 268.

Both of those states were really close, and I think Gore was a better fit for them than Gephardt. Votes don't necessarily go to Bush, but to Nader, allowing Bush to win.

Why was Gore a better fit for Oregon and New Mexico?

I think Gephardt would have also won West Virginia (West Virginia was still a Democratic state at the time and I think Gephardt would have been a much better fit for it than Gore) but this sounds about right.

Dick Gephardt: 275 EVs
George W. Bush: 263 EVs

Why was Gore a better fit for Oregon and New Mexico?

Because Gore was more socially liberal and more fiscally conservative than Gephardt, which I think would fit states like Oregon and New Mexico better.
