The 1972 elections were a mess. Incumbent president Richard Nixon is heavily weakened by Watergate, which is discovered earlier than OTL. Meanwhile, to everybody's shock, Shirley Chisholm wins the Democratic primaries and proceeds to defeat the damaged Nixon.
However, the crises of the '70s - the OPEC embargo, stagflation, etc. - go as OTL, and Chisholm has a troubled presidency. Ronald Reagan defeats Chisholm in a landslide - but her brand of progressive politics still remains.
Ronald Reagan wins re-election in 1980 and is succeeded by Geroge HW Bush in 1984. However, thanks to Chisholm's influence on the political left and the increased activism of African American voters, they are forced to be more liberal than in OTL. Also, due to the 12-year itch, Bush is defeated by Michael Dukakis in 1988. Dukakis wins re-election in 1992, but due to an accident he resigns and his VP, Bill Clinton becomes president.
Alas, the bitter Republicans attack Clinton viciously (Whitewater, Monica Lewinsky, etc.), and his troubles culminate in his divorce with Hillary Clinton in 1995. As such, Clinton endures a crushing defeat against George W Bush in 1996. But Clinton is not about to give up so easily. Unfortunately, his troubles return one last time as he is defeated during the primaries by Joe Biden and Joe Scarborough, who go on to win the 2000 election.
The two Double Joe terms go around the same as the younger Bush's term in OTL, which includes the 2008 recession. Senator Barack Obama was touted as a rising star in the Democratic Party, but the anti-Dem environment was too much for him to handle, so he loses to Senator John McCain.
But President McCain is not out of the woods yet. He faces dogged opposition from the Democratic Party, especially by the indomitable Senator Michelle Obama. Plus, rumor has it that Hillary Rodham is gearing up for a run...
