What would have been the effect of Nixon selecting Reagan for the VP slot in 1968? Does that cost him the election? Or does it help him?

I think the rule is that if Nominee and Running mate are from the same state, they can't carry EVs in that state. However, given Reagan and Agnew's ideological similarity, little else changes...

Nixon/Reagan: 262
Humphrey/Muskie: 231
Wallace/LeMay: 45

No one reaches 269 majority, so the dem-heavy house votes in Humphrey and the dem-heavy senate votes in Muskie.

Nixon had residence in New York at the time, so it would have been fine.

223: Hubert Humphrey(MN)/Stuart Symington(MO) - 40.3%
215: Richard Nixon(NY)/Ronald Reagan(CA) - 40.4%
100: Ross Barnett(MS)/Happy Chandler(KY) - 18.9%
Others - 1.4%

Without a Southerner on the ticket, Humphrey goes with Symington, Connally, or Shivers to draw back in the Texas/Southern Democrats turned off by Johnson's alliance with Yarborough.

I think the map with Reagan as Nixon's running mate would look exactly the same as in IRL with Agnew rather than Reagan

I think Nixon does better in the Sun belt while doing worse in the Upper Mid West

Humphrey wins by getting the '68 map with Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio flipped in his favor.

Possibly NC if he gets Terry Sanford instead of Muskie.

Nixon was registered to vote in New York. He'd actually considered selecting Robert Finch, his acquaintance and Reagan's Lieutenant Governor. Finch later became Nicon's HEW Secretary and a presidential adviser.

Pretty much the exact same map, I don't think Reagan adds anything to the ticket that Agnew didn't already add.

Nixon was living in New York in 1968, and registered to vote there.
