I just found out that the New York deadline to register to vote for the 2018 primaries and general election is tomorrow. I will be 18 years old at the time of these elections. Apparently, however, I must also be at least 18 by the end of this year (December 31, 2017) to register, and I will still be 17 then. Does this mean that I can't vote in my state's 2018 elections or am I missing something here?

Wow. Why is it so damn hard to register to vote in America? Here you just... Go to the polls, and you vote.

On top of that, New York and many other states have closed primaries. The deadline to register for a party for the 2016 NY primaries was in October of 2015 even though the primary election was in April.

What? How on earth is this constitutional?

Now, I'm not a legal scholar by any stretch of the imagination, but it seems to me a law preventing citizens who will be 18 on election day from registering to vote is rather obviously against the spirit of the 26th Amendment. Am I missing something here?

I think it's possible to register prior to turning 18, but you still are obviously barred form voting until the point that you are 18. I may be mistaken, but I have heard tell--notably from a poster or two on this forum--of people registering when they got their driver's licenses.

It's the deadline for the 2017 election and the 2018 primaries.  2018 general election deadline isn't until next fall.

Okay, thanks for the information.

If I recall correctly, I registered to vote when I was 16, but was/am unable to vote until I am 18 (I am 18 right now but I live in a state that has not had any elections between my 18th birthday and the time I am writing this forum post).

I registered to vote at 15. You can register before you turn 18 in every state.
