What happens next?
What can Rockelfeller do as President?
Who does he nominate as VP?
I presume Reagan beats Rocky for the nomination.
Reagan won't win the general as he is too extreme for 1976 and he will send loads of GOP moderates bolting for Carter or for the moderate third party ticket that *will* run in response to Reagan.

If Rockefeller runs for re-election, he wins.

Reagan almost beat Ford for the nomination; I think he would beat Rockefeller, who was more liberal than Ford and disliked in some quarters.

Although if Rockefeller does win the nomination, this might be a way to get President Howard Baker.  He'd be a plausible running mate for Rocky, who then beats Carter but dies on schedule in early '79 (if not sooner due to the additional stress of the Presidency).

How the hell does someone who isn't elected as Vice-President or President but becomes President anyways, win a full term...they don't.

Either Reagan beats Rockefeller in the primary or a Democrat (Ted Kennedy, George McGovern, John Glenn, Walter Mondale or Jimmy Carter defeats him in the General Election).

Rockefeller wins re-election on the sympathy/'rally round the flag' bounce, albeit by less than LBJ did. Reagan would likely have sat out 1976.

If Rocky wins in '76 there is no Reagan presidency as by 1980 the Repubs have been in for 12 years.
