It's almost like they're teaching the kids that actions have consequences, and that they can end up paying the price for the actions of their peers.

Why do the 99.99% of kids who didn't partake in this have to suffer the consequences?

Because learning their lesson by now by getting homecoming canceled is preferable to learning it later from bombs, artillery and head-chopping religious fanatics.

Just because it takes one person to write that on a car does not mean there were not more people aware it would happen, saw it happen, or thought it was funny it happened.

I certainly do not endorse what they sprayed on the car, but it was just immature and inappropriate behavior and not really much worse. It damaged the reputation of the school and the community, and the kids need to learn a lesson, but it's something I could imagine a lot of bored kids going to a small all-white high school in a small town participating in.

Damn never heard boredom used as an excuse for racism before.

As far as I know, they didn't even do it in front of the other school. Yes, it was racist and inappropriate, but they probably didn't have hateful intentions.

The exact same thing happened at my high school after a student came to a dance drunk. This isn't liberal grandstanding - it's just how schools are run.

They're run horribly, yes. That isn't a liberal/conservative issue as you noted. Ironically, now the entire school has probably turned against the innocent victim here because of the administration's actions.

Horrible horrible act and the one(s) who did it need punished, but that's the way it is today.....everyone pays.

Everyone has always paid.

Families in Puerto Rico are paying because people voted for Trump. Children dying to bombs and disease in the Middle East pay because we didn't hold our government to higher standard. Their parents are getting their heads chopped off by religious fanatics because far too many people were willing to give extremist beliefs a pass, or even encourage them.

Pretending that hatred is consequence-free, that what your neighbors, classmates, and fellow voters do doesn't affect you is a deceptive and dangerous luxury no society should ever encourage. But especially now America needs to teach our youth that allowing hate, racism and intolerance to flourish will result in grave consequences or us all in the future.

collective punishment is an abomination.

Vandalizing someone's car with a racist insult is an abomination.
They're both abominations; punish the vandals and not those who are innocent.
