If O'Malley and Tim Kaine were the only major Democratic candidates to run for President, who would win the primary?

Discuss with maps.

I think Tim Kaine would win the primary, and he'd probably beat Trump.

I suspect in the Primary Kaine would be stronger in the South and Midwest while O'Malley would do better in the Northeast and on the West Coast.

Kaine would win the primary for sure.

But guys, he got gas-lit by an incompetent, charisma-free crook who was literally on the brink of losing re-election in a Deep [Atlas] Blue state.

Not a good recipe to beating Trump.

Fmr. Gov. Martin O'Malley (D-MD)
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA)

I actually think O'Malley would narrowly win, and would go on to a narrow victory in the general. In my opinion, Kaine is even less compelling than O'Malley, he's even less attractive to progressives, and I think even being distantly tied to the 2016 loss would only hurt Kaine (esp. considering his poor debate performance).

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA)

Don't you think O'Malley would be much more popular among the African Amerian community?

Tim Kaine is boring as hell but he's better than the guy who tried to tax rain

Tim Kaine is boring as hell but he's better than the guy who tried to tax rain polluted runoff from urban and suburbanized concrete wastelands in one of the most densely populated areas of the entire country, which was actively causing major environmental damage, in order to pay for urgent cleanup efforts for the Chesapeake Bay, which is absolutely central to Maryland's economy

It was basically a carbon tax. The only problem is that it was unpopular politically because it applied to both private residences and businesses. If it had been a corporate-only tax we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

I might have add the state of New York to Kaine since he was Hillary Clinton's running mate.

I think O'Malley would have a mild edge among black voters, but not by Clinton/Sanders 2016 margins, and I think Kaine would be more popular among white southerners, so I gave him the South. I think all of those contests would be relatively close though - O'Malley certainly wouldn't get blown out there like Sanders was.

O'Malley is perceived as a loser, whereas Kaine is perceived as a guy who got stuck with a loser.

Kaine would certainly win the primary. Not sure though whether he'd win the general. Right now, I'd say every serious Democratic candidate would beat Trump. But we shouldn't underestimate him again. Kaine is not the most charismatic person and may be seen as a boring and uninspiring technocrat.

Tim Kaine wins the primary and then the general.
