For anyone who's had a memory since around 1980...yes.

For anyone else, it's still Goldwater.

If you're old enough it's probably Carl Hayden.

McCain has become THE Senator for us all.  He is fighting against tyranny at this point.

Having been born in '85, for me yes. I am actually worried about McCain's status diminishing greatly (once he passes) in all but 1 respect. He will continue to live on in American memory for his war heroism, but I don't see a set of natural allies within the GOP who will defend his more mavericky tactics and priorities.  He was instrumental in McCain-Feingold, the destruction of which the GOP relished achieving; he has become famous for 'I want the regular order' and the maintenance of other such institutional norms, but the vast majority of the party is abandoning these norms wholesale.

We need more people like McCain in Washington politics, but I think we are destined to get even fewer of them in the future.
