I see nothing wrong with this statement. He was highlighting the bravery of soldiers who choose to risk their life to serve their country.
This. Trump says dumb and/or offensive stuff all the time, but I'm pretty sure this was his intent here. Could have been better worded, but I don't think this is that bad.

You guys need to stop lowering the bar for this bum. If any other president had said this, we would be killing him.

really this is the biggest who cares story in Trump's entire presidency.

We know Trump's personality. can we stop expecting things from him? there's no reason for this to be the headline of the New York Times and not the failure to extend CHIP, the attempts by Alexander-Murray to help insurance markets, Pruitt's deplorable and vigorous tenure as EPA Administrator, ect. ect.

That'd require the media and the Democratic establishment to have interest in topics of substance, rather than stylistic issues and obsessing over Trump's boorishness. They think this is some great shock to the country and will chase everyone away from Trump; it's the same strategy the Clinton campaign used last year to such great effect. It doesn't work, people don't care, and it does nothing to truly turn people against Trump and the GOP. All these "sophisticated suburban Republicans who're appalled by Trump's incivility" don't really exist in large numbers; they're liberal fantasies and delusions. But, I guess harping over superficial, everyday Trumpian sociopathic nonsense is easier than making a case for a lackluster, tried-and-failed, neoliberal policy agenda nobody cares about.

This would make sense if Trump's poll numbers were higher.

I know some on the left like to believe that this stuff doesn't matter and it is all about the economics (lol what nonsense...). But stuff like this is hurting Trump. He has alienated everyone who isn't a part of his base and a big reason why is his lack of tact and discipline.

Picking fights with NFL players and sports analysts, lying about your predecessor etc. This stuff is becoming tiresome. People are tired of hearing about this guy everyday and it is reflecting in his poll numbers.

And come election day 2020, Trump will hold onto around 46% of the electorate yet again. His poll numbers were abysmal prior to the '16 election as well, but that didn't stop 46% of Americans from voting for him and a large number to defect to a third party rather than vote for the Democrat. It also hasn't resulted in the loss of a single special election (despite notable increases in vote share for the Democratic candidates) by a Republican since Trump's inauguration. But, sure, keep going with a failed strategy; why not give Trump another 4 years...

I highly doubt that.

Trump got a ton of support from reluctant voters, who didn't like Clinton and decided to give him a chance. Unless he magically gets better at his job, he won't get 46% again. I doubt anyone (besides maybe Warren) that the D's nominate in 2020 is going to have the issues in terms of favorables as Hillary had in 2016.

People are really overrating how strong Trump actually is. Hell, if Comey didn't drop that letter, Clinton would have likely won.

His numbers are still about as high as they were or higher than his favorables were close to election day when he defeated Hillary Clinton. Stop.

But his favorables are now effecting his job approval numbers. Seriously, go look at the comments from various focus groups. It is Trump's temperament and personality that is hurting him the most.

While this never should have been politicized by Rep. Wilson, I will say that Gen. Kelly is out of touch here.  The "he knew what he signed up for" comment worked for him when his son died because both he and his son were career military.  Sgt. Johnson's widow wasn't, nor was the woman who raised him.

Not only that, but it seems painfully obvious that Trump hastily arranged to make calls because of his inaccurate swipe at both Obama and Dubya earlier that day, so the draft evader's reason for making those calls appears to have been pure politics and nothing but politics.

On top of this neither Trump nor Kelly bothered to apologize to the widow about the "misunderstanding".

BTW, Kelly lied.

And as expected, the President undercuts Kelly and it is his own damn fault.
