What if Al Gore defeated Dukakis in the 1988 primaries and won the nomination?

Maybe something along the lines of this:

308
230

Gore won't be an easy target for Atwater like Dukakis was, so with that, a more moderate image, and the fact that Gore is less likely to make the same mistakes he made in 2000, Gore is a stronger candidate than the Duke, and if he were to play his cards right, or Bush ran a weaker campaign against him than he did Dukakis, Gore could narrowly eek it out.

Who would be Gore's (Northern) running mate?  Perhaps Dukakis?

And in the event of a Bush victory, who would be Clinton's running mate in 1992 (assuming no major butterflies)?

He could pick Jerry Brown, winning California, and therefore narrowly, the election.

Brown had lost his most recent race. He had to go all-out as an idiosyncratic candidate in '92; never would've worked as a conventional one.

Dukakis run a terrible campaign, Gore would have done much better. I think a southern Democrat would have won.

✓ Senator Al Gore (D-TN)/Governor Mario Cuomo (D-NY): 293 EVs.; 50.4%
Vice President George Bush (R-TX)/Senator Dan Quayle (R-IN): 245 EVs.; 47.9%
