St. Louis Post Dispatch
Carnahan Survives Aircraft Scare

Jo Mannies- In a scare for Governor Mel Carnahan, the small Cessna he, his son Randy, as well as his close adviser Cliff Sifford was forced to make an emergency landing last night at the small Washington County Airport about 70 miles from St. Louis. Details are not known at this time, though it appears that the aircraft had mechanical problems shortly after take off. This morning Governor Carnahan's campaign issued a statement thanking well wishers and promising to be back on the campaign trail tomorrow. Senator Ashcroft also expressed his gratitude that Governor Carnahan and the other passengers aboard the Cessna were able to land safely.

Polls have shown a tight race between incumbent Senator John Ashcroft, and Governor Carnahan, with the race being seen as one of the marquee senate elections of the year. While Ashcroft has led most polls narrowly, Carnahan has always been close behind. Both Governor Carnahan and Senator Ashcroft are expected to attend the Presidential Debate this evening Washington University in St. Louis, where Governor Bush and Vice President Gore will face off in another hotly contested race.

NBC Election Night Coverage

"My goodness," Mel thought, "I can't believe its this close."

And Tom Brokaw seemed to be thinking the same thing.

"I'm sorry to cut you off Karl, but with only 19% of the vote in, all eyes are on Missouri now in the battle for the Senate. Incumbent Senator John Ashcroft has only a narrow lead over Governor Mel Carnahan. In fact, just now that lead dropped below 5,000 votes. What do you think this means, Tim?"

"Well clearly Ashcroft was just not able to put this race away. Some are even speculating that Carnahan's brush with an aviation disaster in October may have reinvigorated his campaign. And you know in the last couple weeks we saw this race just get away from Senator Ashcroft. Clearly Ashcroft is in the fight of his political life right now. Back to you Tom."

"Right, and back to the big race of the night, it really does look like the Gore people should be celebrating..."

Missouri Senate Results 19% Reporting
John Ashcroft 225,024 50.15%
Mel Carnahan 220,222 49.08%
Others 3,455 0.77%
