My point—unexpressed owing to laziness—was, rather, that Russia enjoys pretending that the United States is the setting of horrible racial tensions that have somehow been mitigated in the Motherland; a proud, multi-ethnic conglomeration. This is patently false, and it is fitting that its ethnic problems result from its status as a settler state. I am tempted to refer to Dostoevsky here, but don’t remember the quote.
