"I want to apologize to the organizers of the Women's Convention for not being able to attend your conference next Friday in Detroit," the Vermont lawmaker said in a statement. "Given the emergency situation in Puerto Rico, I will be traveling there to visit with San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz and other officials to determine the best way forward to deal with the devastation the island is experiencing." In Puerto Rico, about 1 million Americans remain without running water and 3 million without power, CNN reported Wednesday.  Sanders concluded his statement by applauding "their historic work in putting together the march in January and all that you have done since," he said. "My best wishes for a very successful conference."

"It is unfortunate that Senator Sanders will no longer be able to join us at the Women's Convention next week," the organizers said in an email "But the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico - which is being exacerbated by the inaction of our federal government - is a critical matter. We understand his leadership is needed in Puerto Rico and, as always, we deeply appreciate his commitment to communities in need. We look forward to continuing to work with him on issues that impact women and all Americans."

"The U.S. Congress cannot turn its back on the millions of people in Puerto Rico who, four weeks after the hurricane, are still without electricity, food and running water," he continued.

Various women's groups, as well as female media figures such as actress Debra Messing and MSNBC host Joy Reid questioned the decision to have Sanders deliver the convention's opening speech. "This announcement sends the wrong message to women everywhere," EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement earlier this month, while the Center for American Progress’s Neera Tanden called it “pretty amazing” and said she was unfollowing the organization.

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) will deliver the opening remarks at the convention in Detroit.

I understand the spot he was in, here, but I wish he had attended instead of backing down in order to address the issue with a degree of tenacity.

I thank the Women's Convention for saying No to Socialism.

They invited him. He's declining.

Now only if he would decline to run for re-election and let a much younger Democrat have an opportunity to win that Senate seat.

Bernie is afraid of strong women confronting him. His degrading behavior towards women has been highlighted through the years, so congrats to the Resistance for blocking him out of the convention.

It's been disheartening watching the forum degrade Bernie Sanders so much for no apparent reason, but I must concede this is yet another example of him being weak and backing down.

Yes, he's so afraid of strong women that he's going to listen to San Juan mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz
 about the mess there.

I'm a Bernie guy, but with all due respect, his wife being investigated by the FBI is very alarming. No politician is clean and Bernie needs to figure out what he wants to do, I personally don't think he, Hillary or Joe should run. Let the Democrats get the 10 best candidates out there to run against each other and actually unite behind the ticket. Most American voters are very pragmatic and right now, I would like to think now that the majority of Americans are slowly inching toward inclusion of everyone but with the Jester named Donald running the show, he exposes and promotes the extreme wing of his party, which at the end of the day, I don't think he gives a sh**t about but he knows he needs this idiots to support him for re-election and THEY WILL turn out to vote, believe it and if we get a 2nd term of Trump, all bets are off because he'll be lame duck, so I expect him to let loose.

It is kind of weird that people didn't want him & now when he leaves they are bashing him for that. Some say he is too tough on Hillary, some say he was too soft & nothing will truly convince most people anyways.

It is good that he is going to Puerto Rico which is in terrible show. Hopefully Harris, Booker, Biden & other contenders also go there instead of doing fundraisers all the time.

I somewhat expect Bernie and other potential 2020 Democrats to embrace the cause of Puerto Rican statehood following this crisis. It's not only the right response to the situation, which is beyond unacceptable, but also politically smart since it could help motivate the estimated 470,000 Puerto Ricans relocating to the mainland and those who already live here to turnout for Democrats in 2020.

Oh, Bernie did something? Then I disagree with what he did and hate him for it! He's a sexist racist gaslighting far-left weak overbearing unelectable codger commie SOCIALIST who's NOT A DEMOCRAT!!!!11!!!!

Am I doing this right? In all seriousness, I don't actually agree with his decision to back down here, but it seems like some people on this forum are making it their life goal to become an inverse Jfern. It was already annoying that there couldn't be a single thread about Hillary without certain posters derailing the thread to talk about how *evil* she is. Now the same is true of Bernie. This is getting ridiculous.

Sanders did the right thing. It's crazy that he's being criticized by his own supporters for not making a women's convention all about him, like some narcissistic idiot would have done. This reinforces my view that he's no sexist, he just found himself in a circumstantially difficult position.
