Tom Steyer, who last month said that he wouldn’t rule out a 2020 run for president:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=273224.msg5834772#msg5834772

is launching an ad campaign advocating for Trump’s impeachment:

Impeaching Trump will do no good for Democrats lest they have a new Vice President as a consequence. Mike Pence is as reactionary as anyone can be.

I mean, if the Democrats can successfully portray the impeachment as nonpartisan and necessary, it would make sense to destroy Trump and Pence in one blow. However, before doing so, they should consider an alliance with moderate Republicans to make someone like LoBiondo Speaker, and then impeach Trump and, before, Pence.

What a waste of money. This will only help Trump if it happens.

You can't vote the president out of office before his re-election campaign. You can't impeach someone you don't like, and you can't 'destroy Trump and Pence in one blow' because you don't like that they were elected. It's nutty and pure lunacy.

If Trump committed a crime then he will be impeached and Pence will become president. If he didn't (as appears overwhelmingly likely right now), then he will be president until January 2021.

Yes, if we plead to the Republicans who are totally complicit in Trump's rise then they'll surely impeach him.

Steyer has such a great record of success! See the losing party getting routed in the 2014 and 2016 elections.

The Democrats got routed in 1924, 1926, and 1928, too.  And Hoover wasn't a really bad person.

I personally am no fan of Trump as President, but my main concern about this impeachment effort is the potential of repeating the Republicans' mistake in impeaching Bill Clinton in the late 1990s. Back then, there wasn't enough political support for conviction in the Senate, and the end result was a boost in Clinton's approval ratings after the impeachment trial.

Unless the Democrats pursue impeachment, there isn't much of a point in them retaking the house. The republican senate majority is very secure in 2018 because of the map, so it's not like dems taking the house in 2018 means they can send democratic bills to President Trump. McConnell also has no real incentive to compromise with a democratic house, because doing so would have little electoral benefit, and because Trump might not sign such compromises anyway. The biggest thing democrats could do with a house majority is impeachment. I understand that Trump would be likely to be found not guilty in the senate, where a 2/3 majority is needed, but it would at least serve to embarrass him and expose to the world, and hopefully even to some of Trump's supporters, just how foul of a person he is.

The democratic party has made it clear they want to do a litmus test on something. Some say do it on abortion, some say do it on single payer. Well I've got a better idea - require every democratic HoR candidate to support impeachment. Make sure that trial happens. Because if impeachment isn't done, there's really no point to a democratic house majority, unless you guys just want to vote for single payer 70 or 80 times just to watch it die in the senate over and over again, and thus we should let the republicans keep the house.

The NRCC is hoping and praying that Dems run on impeachment in 2018. The Dem leadership has been smart enough to avoid this issue so far, but the loony base may force the issue at some point.

The Dems shouldn't necessarily run on Impeachment, but they should definitely do it if they get the house. Three Presidents have either been impeached or resigned before it could happen - Andrew Johnson, Nixon, and Clinton. In all three cases, their successor belonged to the opposite political party.

I love that Steyer put the ad on Fox & Friends, and that Trump is such an idiot that he responds to it and gives it more publicity.

48% of Americans want impeachment(even without Mueller's report, which will very likely increase the numbers). 37% approve of Trump's performance as President.

It may be a pipe dream now but it will get people motivated and sets a goal Dems can work for. It is a worthy goal-Trump has committed impeachable offenses and is unfit to be President-and at least President Pence would respect the rule of law and be generally sane, and he'd be too damaged by impeachment and likely facing a Democrat Congress to do too much damage.

Steyer is a billionaire, so the best cause he can do is to keep his nose out of political affairs.

How about Bob Iger?  He's only a hundred millionaire, not a billionaire.  Tongue

Note that in the new ABC/WaPo poll:

https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=275946.msg5890824#msg5890824

74% of Democrats say it's "likely" that Trump personally committed a crime in connection to Russia's attempts to influence the election.  Even if Mueller's eventual report doesn't show anything that's deemed prosecutable in a criminal court for Trump himself, I don't think there's any political downside in a Democratic primary for a candidate to say that Trump should be impeached.  Of course, by the time of the 2020 primaries, the candidates won't actually be running on impeachment anymore, since we'll then be in the final year of this presidential term anyway, so they'll just say that the way to get Trump out of office now is to vote him out in November.

Steyer to drop another $10M on Trump impeachment ads

https://www.politico.com/story/2017/11/09/tom-steyer-trump-impeachment-ads-244746

I wish he would have just taken this now-$20 million dollars and invested it in groups doing voter registration and other GOTV stuff. It would have been a lot more useful. He can invest a billion dollars in an ad campaign if he wants - it's not going to change Republicans minds on this. The only conceivable way (right now) to impeach Trump is for Democrats to win as many seats in Congress as possible.
