It's a UN agency, this isn't shocking at all.  They hate liberty.

I mainly consider the UN as welcome comic relief in a terrible, terrible world nowadays

Seriously I don't know what the UN thinks with not this appointment but several others like Saudi Arabia as chair of human rights committee.  This just damages their reputation whereas with all the global problems we probably need a stronger not weaker UN yet this makes a joke of them.  I realize they want to represent all regions but surely there are better leaders they can choose from Africa.

Like who, Sisi, Zuma?

Africa's leaders are a joke a best.

And in the Middle East the only remotely credible leader is Netanyahu, who will never get anywhere near a UN body, with all the anti-Israel bias floating around.

Sirleaf comes to mind. Maybe the new Tunisian leader?
