Well, what are your opinions on hunting for sport? And what about taxidermy, which allows you to preserve the animals or parts of the animals you killed to showcase as souvenirs or trophies?

Hunting for sport is great, as long as it is done in an environmentally responsible way, and you eat what you kill when possible.

Hunting purely for sport isn't something I agree with or would partake in myself (more into fishing personally), but I think it's okay as long as you actually use the carcass and clean up when you're done.

Oh, and preferably eat the animal instead of turning it into a trophy which I find rather morose.

It's repulsive, I understand real hunting, for where most or all the material of the slain carcasses are used, that's totally fine, but just for sport hunting should be banned, it is one of the most @rseholic things a person can do.

If they give the moose meat to the natives, is it okay? The guy that cut my hair most recently was about to head to Idaho for that. Sounded amazing. With a bow, too!

It's not really a sport if your opponent can't compete.

Your opponent can shoot as many animals as he or she would like!

I have no problem with hunting deer or similar animals for sport. Oftentimes, there are are way too many deer in the area, and all hunting, including sport hunting, is necessary to control the population. Otherwise, the deer will end up dying in much less humane circumstances, anyway, like starving or being hit by cars.

I believe some sport hunters follow an ethics code by which you give your prey enough leeway to escape your fire/trap/whatever.  But I wouldn't really know because I've never hunted.

This is the only instance in which I would approve of it. That's actually a fine practice.

I'm guessing we are imagining different things here.  Some people are thinking of Denny the Dentist and Lion Killer or Dick Cheney shooting fish (or quail) in a barrel (or his buddy's face).  Others are imagining some goofy Earther type using paleo weapons to hunt only sick herd animals.

Do we even know what percentage of hunters are "sport" (however we define it) hunters?  I'm assuming it's tiny, I've never met one and I know a lot of hunters.

No matter, people should be able to do what they want as long as it's not particularly cruel...just like regular hunting....whatever the hell that means.

I don't like it, but it's something so many people do where I live.  I don't get worked up about it as long as no endangered species are killed, limits are followed, and the animals are shot to be killed quickly.  After all, the animals shot after living free in the wild have much better lives than most animals killed in slaughterhouses.

It's ok. I've gone hog hunting a few times. Never even had the opportunity to take a shot. I'll probably go again if I ever get the chance. A relative of mine took two of them down in under ten seconds last time I went.

Not my cup of tea, but it plays a part in managing populations where our land use disrupts natural predator/prey patterns.

If you're going to eliminate the apex predators of an area so that coyotes won't eat your anklebiter dog, you'd best be prepared to take the apex predator's place.
