NorCal.  I like forests when they're not on fire.

NorCal. Those in SoCal wrongly think USC is in Los Angeles instead of Columbia.

The more populous, denser, more urban, dryer, hotter, more important, more amazing, more beautiful one (Southern California.)

I still like Northern California more than most places, however.

There's nothing amazing about palm trees and dumb words like "gnarly"

Silicon Valley has well overtaken Hollywood in importance

And there's nothing like even Point Reyes in SoCal, let alone Lake Tahoe or Yosemite.

NorCal and it's not close. SoCal has so much of what is wrong with the nation. It's not a horrible place but I don't like it and I don't like anything that comes of nepotistic perverted mob like Hollywood.

This is so ridiculous I think it might be a troll post, but still, it makes zero sense to me. Do you seriously believe that the entertainment industry is the only thing that comes out of THE ENTIRE SOUTHERN HALF of California? This is like saying you wouldn’t want to live anywhere in the New York metropolitan area because you hate Wall Street.

Of course not, but Hollywood culture is part of SoCal culture. Or I should say that Hollywood culture is derived from SoCal culture.

Hollywood isn't the only reason I don't prefer SoCal and prefer NorCal. Climate is a big deal, and NorCal beats out boring sunny SoCal on that front. The Salton Sea region in particular makes me want to vomit just looking at it.  Water is also a big deal, and NorCal has more secure water supplies than SoCal. SoCal's water supply is insecure and its economy may suffer - like you said, the entertainment industry is far from the only thing to come out of SoCal, but it has a big agricultural industry that depends on threatened water supplies.

Besides, I don't hate SoCal. I'd choose SoCal easily over the neighboring LV or Phoenix metros, and probably over hothouse Houston. San Diego, while it has a boring climate, isn't particularly hot despite its southern latitude.

This is a tough one.

My trips to California have typically been to NorCal (I went to SD and LA once, but have been to SF multiple times).  San Francisco is the most beautiful city I've ever been too, and it has a great culinary scene and amazing weather.  Living there would be a tough sell, however, do to the exorbitant cost of living and pretty radical politics.

The traffic/pollution in SoCal is terrible, but is generally more affordable and conservative.

Voted NorCal.  Would love to live in San Francisco if I could afford it.

Not really. The gas costs, lower wages, and healthcare issues make up for any inherent rent issues.

S.F. proper has better wages, is the only city besides New York that's probably easier without a car so you save on gas [although BART kinda sucks], and Healthy SF (alongside MediCal) ensures good healthcare.

Also, Chico's more affordable and conservative than either.

Assuming we basically mean LA metro vs. SF metro by this, I would go with SoCal, though neither would be my pick.  The weather is much better and, while it is still overwhelmingly Democratic, I don't think there is quite the pervasive liberalism in the culture like there is in the Bay Area.

NorCal by a longshot, though I could definitely do SoCal if we're talking San Diego. Also assuming we are mostly talking about the coast, because I wouldn't bother with the interior, other than maybe tolerating Sacramento for stints outside of summer. Lake Tahoe and the oodles of National Parks would be fun to visit, but I wouldn't live there.
