How would you have voted in primaires if your first choice candidate didn't make it to your state's primary?

Democratic:
1984: John Glenn (1st choice: Fritz Hollings)
2004: John Kerry (1st choice: Dick Gephardt)
2016: Hillary Clinton (1st choice: Jim Webb)

Republican:
2016: Donald Trump (1st choice: Scott Walker)

Since 1960:

1960: Stuart Symington (1st: LBJ)
1964: All the way with LBJ!
1968: Hubert Humphrey (1st: LBJ); though would have enthusiastically supported Nelson Rockefeller after LBJ withdrawal
1972: Terry Sandford (1st: Scoop Jackson)
1976: Milton Shapp (1st: Frank Church); enthusiastically Gerald Ford in general election first choice
1980: Ted Kennedy (1st: Jimmy Carter)
1984: Walter Mondale (1st: Reubin Askew)
1988: Joe Biden (1st: Al Gore)
1992: Douglas Wilder (1st: Jerry Brown)
1996: (Republican): Bob Dole (1st: Richard Lugar)
2000: only one candidate
2004: Wesley Clark (1st: Bob Graham)
2008: Joe Biden (1st: Barack Obama)
2012: (Republican): Gary Johnson (1st: Jon Huntsman), enthusiastically Obama in general election of course
2016: Bernard Sanders (1st: Hillary Clinton)*; Republican: George Pataki (1st: John Kasich)

* in retrospect, I think Bernard would have been the better candidate for general election

OK this would be my list of second choices (regardless of how far they got, rather than back up choices, which is probably what I should have said in the title):

1980: Ted Kennedy (Jimmy Carter)
1984: John Glenn (Fritz Hollings)

1992: Bob Kerrey (Bill Clinton)
2000: Bill Bradley (Al Gore)
2004: Bob Graham (Dick Gephardt)
2008: John Edwards (Hillary Clinton)
2016: Hillary Clinton (Jim Webb)

Republican:
1976: Ronald Reagan (Gerald Ford)
1980: Ronald Reagan (George H. W. Bush)
1988: Bob Dole (George H. W. Bush)
1992: Pat Buchanan (George H. W. Bush)
1996: Lamar Alexander (Pat Buchanan)
2000: John McCain (George W. Bush)
2008: Mike Huckabee (Mitt Romney)
2012: Rick Perry (Mitt Romney)
2016: Rick Perry (Scott Walker) [neither made it to the first primary, so I found myself going to Trump]

1968: Humphrey (first choice: Kennedy)
1972: McGovern (first choice: Muskie)
1976: Brown (first choice: Udall)
1980: Carter (first choice: Kennedy)
1984: Askew (first choice: Glenn)
1988: Jackson (first choice: Dukakis)
1992: Clinton (first choice: Harkin)
2004: Kerry (first choice: Dean)
2008: Clinton (first choice: Obama)

As you can see, I really know how to pick 'em. Only three of my first choices have become nominees, and only one has become president.

Since 1968(First choice in parentheses) Sad

1968: Richard Nixon(Nelson Rockefeller)
1972: Henry Jackson (Richard Nixon)
1976: Henry Jackson (Ronald Reagan)
1980: George HW Bush (Ronald Reagan)
1984: John Glenn (Ronald Reagan)

2004: Joe Lieberman (George W Bush)
2008: Mitt Romney (John McCain)
2012: Jon Huntsman (Mitt Romney)
2016: Marco Rubio (John Kasich)

With hindsight on how the next 4 years would go(but no idea how next election would go):

1968 : Nelson Rockefeller (Richard Nixon)
1972: Hubert Humphrey (Henry M Jackson)
1992: George HW Bush (Bill Clinton)
2000: George W Bush(John McCain)
2004: Dick Gephardt (Joe Lieberman)
2008: John McCain (Mitt Romney)

The reason I would have preferred Rockefeller over Nixon in 68 is due to the electability factor . Nixon lost in 1960 and he even lost a state wide election in 62 so due to that he wouldn't have been my first choice.

Next year will be the first time to have primaries voted on by the public rather than registered party members. And at the time of the 2016 convention I was not a member.

The top 4 candidates all had issues. I would say McAfee is a definite no, but then after that between Perry, Petersen, and Johnson I can make a case for all 3 to be either first, second, or third.

I did not follow the prior LP selections enough or politics in general enough to make a selection on the primary candidates.

I will have to check into it further.

Reagan- Didnt have enough experience in 1968 (He was Governor for less than two years at that point)

Rhodes- I believe he only ran in Ohio to control the nominating process at the convention.

2016 - Kasich (first choice was Jeb!, but it basically was a three way tie between Jeb!, Kasich and Rubio)
2012 - Romney (first choice was Huntsman but Romney was the de facto first choice because it was painfully obvious that Huntsman wasn't winning)
2008 - Giuliani (first choice was McCain)
2000 - Bush (first choice was McCain)
1996 - Bob Dole (first choice was Lugar)
