They'll be itching to get the seat back, and most likely they will. Who is the nominee? My money would be on Brooks or maybe Strange seeking redemption.

Mo Brooks really should run again.

I could see a clown car forming very easily. Brook definitely runs again IMO, and I'd bet on Roby making a run too. Maybe Ed Henry as well.

I think Strange is done; he is not only tainted with Bentley's corruption, but he's now the guy that lost to Roy Moore and opened the door to Jones's win.

Primary will probably be Brooks vs. Roby. I expect Brooks wins.

Will be interesting to see if Dems play the long game here. Putting resources into Alabama statewide in the gubernatorial election and legislative races could pose a major threat to the state's rampant voter suppression operation, and be one of the lasting legacies of the Trump era.

Mo Brooks just announced on the House floor that he is battling prostate cancer.

Gary Palmer would be a smart recruit for the GOP to target.  He could substantially cut into Jones' margins in Jefferson County, since that's his Congressional district.

The Democrats should be playing the long game period here. There is certainly a potential for a ascendant coalition in some of these states when you combine the solid floor of the minority vote, with Millenial whites and college educated suburbanites turned off by the Republican Party. Just consider this, GA starts off almost 10% closer in Presidential years than Alabama. It also has that automatic voter registration thing now. States don't vote, people do. The current political leanings of these states is because of white baby boomers being so Republican. Younger whites are less Republican and younger voters are less white.

I should note that the South has generally been a generation or two behind the rest of the country on trends be it cities voting Republican in mid 20th century, suburbs in 2000's etc, so it stands to reason that Republicans could have a similar decline to what that they experienced in the 1990's in other parts of the country.

Republicans are also going to help with this transition by alienating people with their tactics as they begin to feel their power slipping.

First let's establish something here: Do NOT write-off Jones' chances at reelection. Anyways, the GOP's strongest candidate would probably be Lee Busby, although I would hope the AL GOP is dumb enough to allow Moore to run again Wink

I'd prefer Byrne, but I guess Palmer or Aderholt could win as well. I believe Jones will be reelected if Trump loses and lose reelection if Trump wins. It's still very early, and obviously I wouldn't write off his chances at reelection at reelection either (the race is a Tossup IMO).

There's not another Roy Moore, unfortunately. He's DOA in 2020.

I read an article recently about how Republican leaders are courting Bradley Byrne to run for the seat because of his business connections, although I can’t link to it right now.

He could be reelected but it's currently Lean R. Any of the Representatives would do fairly well.
