If the GOP nominates McDaniel and somehow manages to give Democrats another senator from the Deep South, I don't think I'm ever going to stop laughing

Yeah. And Presley's a pretty popular figure in northern Mississippi. The state has a higher black vote than Alabama so He's have more room for error with white voters.

Presley, Bredesen, O'Rourke, Graham, Evans... could be the return of the southern white Democrats next year. With Jeff Jackson in 2020 too.

In a perfect world, Mississippi will have Senators Presley/Mabus and Governor Hood by 2019.

I wonder what a Gene Taylor vs. McDaniel would look like

I think Gene Taylor would win as well against McDaniel, the question is how he wins the primary

Especially considering he's a Republican now.

Presley has to run now. We demand a competitive election in Mississippi.

Who knows though? He just did it to challenge Palazzo.

That's not how I read the tweet. He was summarizing the Times article, which said that internal polling shows Wicker beating McDaniel.

It's such a dumb career move on McDaniel's part though. He could of just waltzed in in 2020 once Cochran was out.

I disagree. Cochran, as we see, is going to be replaced by a relatively fresh face establishment Republican part of his appeal against Cochran, and to a lesser degree wicker, is draining the swamp of long-time Congress Critters, etcetera

Now answer me this. What is the timing involved here. In other words is there a scenario where Cochran's resignation results in a special election before when his seat would be up next year? I'm trying to think of some scenario where McDaniel runs for his seat in a special election rather than for Wickers next year. Or maybe he would still run for Wickers if you loses a special for Cochran's seat. But you know what I mean

GOP is finished!

seriously, I feel almost greedy at this point with these new Senate pickup opportunities.

Seriously. The only recruit we could possibly get that's better is Hood, and maybe Mabus.

Presley would be excellent candidate for conservative Mississippi (especially - against McDaniel, Wicker is another matter), but he is not Doug Jones. Looking at his voting record in Mississippi's legislature - more like Zell Miller was during his Senate years, and - surely much more conservative then Manchin. Is present day Democratic party ready for such Democratic Senator? 20 years ago - sure, but in present polarized times - i have doubts. Especially about "activists"....

Wicker, who was appointed in December 2007, didn't have to face a special election until November 2008.  So I imagine that any special next year would be concurrent with the other Senate election.

Only conservative Democrat stand chance in Mississippi. At least - socially conservative.

Presley would only stand a chance against Chris McDaniel emergent from a divisive GOP primary.

How do Hood and Mabus compare to him ideologically?

I wish Democrats were as accepting of social moderates/conservatives in red states as Republicans are of social moderates/liberal RINOs in blue states.

They are. Frankly much more so in my opinion

In the perfect world for Mississippi Republicans, they would strike a deal with McDaniel to take the open seat and leave her alone. Uniting McDaniels anti-establishment forces with the Republican base 4 turn out would be a great combination oh, and avoid too divisive a primary.

However, in reality Ville there is no chance the governor's going to bypass a couple of his close personal friends including members of the Congressional Delegation and appoint McDaniels over them.

Presley's been gushing over Jones on Twitter though, calling him his kind of Democrat.

Politico also says he is being heavily courted.

Both are Southern populists, so, at least partially, yes. But Jones is much more liberal on social issues..
