Meaning there are no official nominees and all candidates are listed without party affiliation. Kind of like Mayoral elections in Chicago, I believe.

Still an oxymoron.

Why would candidates be listed without party affiliation in a US Senate race? Louisiana, California, and Georgia (only for special elections) have nonpartisan primaries with affiliation on listed on the ballot.

Because Mississippi law doesn't allow affiliation listing for Special Elections.

Same thing happened in a recent special for a state legislature seat.

So it would be Louisiana Rules Top Two with a runoff round if no one clears 50%?  Just like GA-06?  If so, and if Cochran actually does resign, it would be political malpractice not to run Jim Hood.  The Dem floor is already like 10% higher in MS than in AL and look how close the AL special is polling.

^ Yep. And Jim Hood, if you're reading this, you have my Enthusiastic Endorsement if you choose to run.

Imagine a world where Mississippi has Senators Hood and Presley in 2019?

Democratic voters in Mississippi who in 2014 turned out to push Cochran over the top against a teabagger must feel really screwed now.

Shame, really. I always liked Cochran and I really wouldn't hold my breath for a Democratic Senator from Mississippi anytime soon. Especially not with a lower special election turnout.

It seems like it was either then or now.  Cochran held out for as long as he could.

This.  I hope Cochran recovers from his health problems outside of the Senate.

Wulfric gonna Wulfric.

But, in seriousness, the nice thing is that Hood could run without risking his position as AG.

Maybe one of the row officers - perhaps Stacy Pickering (Auditor).

The article mentions Lt. Gov Tate Reeves, Rep. Gregg Harper and SoS Delbert Hosemann as possibilities, with Chris McDaniel as a last-resort option. Reeves is clearly looking at a 2019 governor run and Hosemann is old so I think Harper probably has the best shot, but MS Reps are clearly wary of a repeat of Luther Strange.

Sounds like what Hawaii does. Note that this was actually 2 different elections, the first was just for the final month of the unexpired term.

It's a Southern thing. Georgia did not have the partisan affiliation as an option in state legislative special elections (which I believe is the only instance in which this scenario applies in GA) until very recently; I believe it was a GOP change.

Reeves wants to be governor for sure, McDaniel has 0.0% of getting the Nod, hes on the wrong side of this one. Hosemann is too old for it.

Dark Horse is clearly Phillip Gunn

Then Bryant should appoint a placeholder who won't run in the special election. It eliminates the accusations that somehow the appointment was a political favor, which is what tainted Big Luther.

Don't think hes fallen out of favor according to my MS friends, but hes behind in line, I'd expect him to move up to Reeves' LG. Harpers been tied to Barbour world for a long time
