Since it looks like New Zealand is going to end up with a Labour-NZ First coalition with confidence and supply provided by the Greens, what does this mean for the country's immigration policy? Labour made it their intention to reduce immigration to between 20,000 and 30,000 annually, while NZ First's platform calls for it being reduced to 10,000.

Once the coalition forms, will New Zealand's immigration policy more resemble Labour's or NZ First's?

Since they both agree that inmigration has to be reduced the only question is the number. My guess is that they'll go with Labour's lower boundary (20 000) or maybe slightly less than that (say, 17500)

Immigration, especially unskilled immigration, will be cut by 20-30 thousand-as was Labour's policy.

You don't think NZ First's addition to the coalition will change that at all?

These are targets anyway, presumably some immigration rules will be changed, but if isn't remotely feasible to set an arbitrary cap

Media reports have suggested that the immigration cuts are towards Labour's lower cuts rather than NZ First's more stringent ones.

Immigration cuts. Not as many as they wanted but there would have been 0 under the Nationals.

But Labour was already planning to do that.

So why side with them over English?

Well Labour's plans wouldn't have been implemented under a National government, and while we can't be sure, National were not as keen to cut immigration so if they'd gone with National immigration levels would likely be higher than them going with Labour. Also, one of the reasons NZ First did go with Labour is because they have more in common on policy and there were less gaping gaps on policy like there were between NZ First and National.
