McKay Coppins says that's the provisional plan.

Why in the world would a former Presidential nominee go to the Senate from a different state at 71.
According to the article, he wants an easy victory after his many losses.

We have known this plan for a while...the question has always been weather it will actually go through.  This article seems like it still doesn't know when the plan will take place. Interesting thing is that Bannon is also making plays if the seat opens, despite the fact that Utah is ground Zero for anti-Trump Republicans.

Closest precedent would be Mondale '02 or HHH '70, but they'd both been senators before.

And both ran in the state they represented, whereas Romney would represent a state other than the one he was Governor.

I don't think the Dems have their hopes too high to win a Utah Senate seat...

No Democrat can beat Romney in Utah. It's that simple.

Meh, Romney will probably be a slightly better senator than Trump lackey DC Fossil Hatch. I'm okay with this.

Romney would have no problem of winning the race since Utah is one of the most anti-Trump red states (since Trump won only 45 % of the vote in Utah) and because of Trump's disregard towards the Mormons who are forming an overwhelming majority of Utah's population.

Cheesy

(I honestly don't care too much, but Romney would be good in the Senate, even if he's old.  I just want more interesting stuff to happen this cycle.)

Romney would be a decent add to the Senate, and it makes sense anyway. Finish up your career as a prominent Senator. He also can gift one of his sons the seat in 2024.

Is Utah the most unlikely state to elect a Democrat to the Senate?  If not, what is?  Wyoming, Idaho?

Flip side: what's the most unlikely state to elect a Republican?  Vermont?

Definitely California IMO, followed by NY, MD and HI.

I'd say Oklahoma is the most unlikely state to elect a Democratic Senator, followed closely by Arkansas, Idaho and Tennessee.

Josh Romney wants to be Governor of Utah, not Senator. He's got a relatively young family so it works out better that way.

imo this helps back my theory that Romney will try to primary trump in 2020 or run as a independent this will help boost his national profile again

Romney running as an independent would hand the election to the Democratic candidate (of course, Romney might prefer that outcome to Trump being reelected.)

I think Romney knows that and he might do that because of it he hates Trump more than it seems any other politician http://www.cnn.com/2017/08/18/politics/mitt-romney-donald-trump-apologize/index.html
