The Department of Vendée has recently called for it to be recognized as the first modern genocide. It hasn’t attracted a lot of scholarly attention, but there is some debate over the topic...

It’s more of a hot topic among “traditionalists” than anyone else, but they do make a compelling case, in my opinion. The people of the Vendée were selected for an admitted extermination based on their religious affiliation and defense of their religious authorities.
