I'm fine with otherkin/fictionkin people. I don't really understand it but if it's not harming anybody I don't see why people should make a big deal about it.

Third Wave Feminism is evil.

The first two are not. The rest of the world needs a first-waver, not a 3rd waver.

The child tax credit is poor public policy and the deduction for charitable giving has little behavioural impact and instead serves as a large giveaway to wealthy individuals who misuse 501(c)(3)s.

I also believe that everyone should pay at least something in income taxes, not because I'm a monster (well, I am, but that's another story), but because it's persuasively theorized that a feeling of "everyone has skin in the game" makes earned government benefits less susceptible to defending (social security is a good example - everyone pays into it and attempts to alter the program have been met with vigorous defense). The stronger the link in the public consciousness between a government program's benefits and it's funding, the more likely it is to sustain long term.

Writing as someone who has been on the board of some small charities, and treasurer of one, I can say that the deduction matters to those charities. One group I was involved with went from not 501(c)(3) to getting that status. It definitely helped fundraising, and not just from the very wealthy and big corporations.

Yes!

I was about to post how I think mainstream feminism has no place in society, then I noticed your post. It's become less about actually pushing policies to ensure women are treated as equals and more about how evil men are, "smashing the patriarchy", whining about "rape culture" while conveniently ignoring men who are victims as well and relying solely on the court of public opinion rather than actual courts, and often times focuses on issues that seem to only affect upper/middle class white women. Many issues pushed and the loudest voices in these movements are out of touch with issues that poor and minority women care about, often resorting to telling people what they think is good for them, and shaming them when they disagree.

isn't second wave feminism mostly people like Dworkin, who are decidedly more nutty and odd than third-wavers?

That in and of itself could be an unpopular opinion. Tongue

I'd disagree. If it's my opinion that Emma Watson isn't that attractive, that's obviously an unpopular opinion.

Dworkin is a really extreme example of second-wave feminism. The most iconic example would be Gloria Steinem.

Most of the complaints about third wave feminism posted earlier though seem more like they're actually complaints about either:
1-TERFs, who are not third wave feminists at but leftovers of the rather fringe second wave variety mentioned above or
2-Random people on Tumblr who literally have as much influence as the average Atlas poster.

Second-wave is actually my favorite kind of feminism. Especially the Dworkin/MacKinnon side of it.

This seems like the right thread to say this.

An important mainstream current of the second-wave, as related to me by my personal experiences with a few different second-wave feminists, was about empowering women to be able to do the same things that men could. People like Dworkin are fringe extremists who in many ways have more of a throughline with the third-wave, even if they pre-date it in time. That they have come to be regarded less as fringe extremists is an unfortunate development.

I believe that we are all basically bad (though capable of redemption), and that evil is merely a reflection of the human condition rather than an aberration.
