 - I absolutely hate the “Scott’s Tots” episode of The Office, and I skip past it when I rewatch the show (as I have a few times over the past four years) because it makes me so uncomfortable.
 - Matt Damon’s recent comments are pretty tone-deaf, but eventually we are going to have to confront the fact that not all sexual wrongdoings are equally terrible if we want #MeToo to have a lasting impact instead of eventually imploding.

I have the impression that all my opinions are unpopular.  Instead of referring you to my entire posting history, I guess I'll just mention one of them.  In order to achieve a more equitable and sustainable system of health care benefits for all the country's citizens, I think all adults in the U.S., except for the destitute, should pay higher taxes.

Pretty much every opinion I hold is unpopular, but here are just a few:

George W. Bush was a good president, at least in domestic policy.
Barack Obama was not an especially good president.
Most Pixar films aren't that good, and Finding Nemo was terrible.
Good billionaires exist.
Marijuana should remain illegal.
Roe v. Wade is one of the worst Supreme Court decisions of all time.
Parents should have the right to send their kids to whatever school they want, whether public, private, or charter.
Obesity and heart disease are caused by sugar, not animal fat.
Life begins at conception.
Vaccines do not cause autism.
Soft drinks, though unhealthy, are better for you than alcohol.
Alcohol is as dangerous as smoking or hard drugs.  Same goes for marijuana.
Hand-drawn, traditional animation is better than CG animation.
Toys should not be sold as gender-specific.
Chris Christie and John Kasich are two of the best governors in the country, and I will miss both of them when they're gone.
Trump was elected because of protectionism, not racism.
Most police officers do not target young black men simply because of race.

I have a lot of unpopular opinions clearly.  A lot of them stem from my belief that communicating successfully language is inherently difficult, and so it makes sense to have a bias towards the most charitable interpretation of a remark, since you almost always approach a text or speech with a bias towards what it is going to say whether or not you recognize it.

Along with this, most things that get called "dog whistles" are nothing of the kind. Some term may have a racial connotation, but that is typically because the term has accrued that connotation while still retaining its original meaning, not because the term is used by a certain group of people to secretly say how racist they are. A person who complains about "rootless cosmopolitans" may or may not be an anti-Semite as a part of that, but unless they are in the propoganda business, chances are they wouldn't like someone with the characteristics of a rootless cosmopolitan whether or not the person is Jewish. Also the idea that Lee Atwater revealed some esoteric truth that "tax cuts" and similar platform positions are really all about racism is a preposterous misinterpretation of what he was saying in that infamous interview.

Child support is an extremely broken and rigged system, so that is not something that should be held against anyone.  My only gripe is that he eventually paid it off anyways, instead of taking a principled stand against the system.

Child support is an extremely broken and rigged system, so that is not something that should be held against anyone.  My only gripe is that he eventually paid it off anyways, instead of taking a principled stand against the system.

What are these problems then?

How about this case where someone was determined to owe huge amounts of back child support accrued during time they were in prison (on death row after a wrongful murder conviction) that they were unable to pay due to the circumstances

How about this case where someone was determined to owe child support for a child that was born without their permission (after they were lied to about the usage of birth control and about genetic infertility)

How about this case where someone who was a victim of rape was determined to owe child support for a child born as a result of the rape

As long as cases like these exist, I think we would be better off as a society getting rid of child support systems altogether than to have cases like these continuing to exist.

Yes, these cases are rare, but the depravity of what happened in each of these cases is immense enough to make me think we would be better off ending the entire thing overall.

Many (like 99% women) people desperately need child support to support their child and themselves(especially women, who are systemically pushed from high paying jobs that give the ability to be financially independant), especially in cases of domestic abuse(we really don't want abusers to be able to keep their victims hostage because they're the only breadwinner). Repealing child support would cause devastating consequences that would far outweigh the benefits of the much rarer problems it imposes. We didn't legalize rape because of lynchings. Why should this be any different?

IMO the biggest problem with child support is that there seems to be no opt-out for it at all.  I don't think any person should be subject to 18 years hard labor against their will, physical or financial, male or female.  That precisely is why I'm pro-choice.

But, I also believe that childbearing should be universally discouraged.  That's what puts me at odds with most people, I think.

Well one difference is it's usually pretty easy for a person in financial difficulty to not rape someone.

His argument was entirely based around a tiny number of systemic failures (the fixing of which would be as easy as repeal). (And pretty much none of the black men lynched for rape were actually guilty,  anyway).
