<forgive me for the thread title, hopefully I'll think of something better....I'm up for suggestions>

(and play the country's music as well, like they do for every other country)

International sports federations need to stand up to the bigotry of the several Muslim countries that do this and stop letting these racists nations host events.  Until then, all non-bigoted countries should boycott events held in the racist countries.

The fact that countries that try to subvert the basics of international sportsmanship are still allowed to host competitions is a disgrace rooted in blatant anti-semitism.

That would be nice...but Israel's soccer program isn't that good... and Qatari officials would never let them in the country, regardless of what FIFA wanted.

The United States twice let North Korea in for the Women's World Cup. They got to lose to the US in both Ohio and Massachusetts.

Until this President, we've never threatened to wipe North Korea off the map (at least since 1953...before the Women's World Cup existed). Qatar on the other hand is opposed to Israel's existence, and would do anything to start a war with them... if they do let them in, I would expect a repeat of the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Then Qatar needs a two decade long timeout from playing with other nations because they clearly aren't mature enough.  Or they could make mirror competitions just for them and their fellow racists.

Do Saudi, UAE, and Bahrain do this too?

Perhaps if it is for soccer or some other sport with a qualification format for a major competition then first offense is a fine, second is having to play the match with no fans, and third is to lose the home matches - forcing them to be played at a neutral site.

The whole oil money ties to World Cup award without regard to soccer tradition or the overall feasibility of the event was a sham. And FIFA has shown rampant corruption in the awarding of Russia and Qatar's bids.

Well that's a whole 'nother problem right?  What international sporting organizations are NOT corrupt?  The Olympics, FIFA, F1 all are, anybody else?  Maybe it's just sports orgs that keep their headquarters in Europe?

This is the kind of thing you can google in fact. Qatar have said they would allow an Israeli team to participate, which doesn't answer the question of whether they would allow Israeli supporters into the country

Heaquarters in Switzerland (or Monaco), it's kind of our speciality you know?

Anyway, the reason international sports organisations are so corrupt is because they are private sector monopolies, no oversight and they can do what they want.

Which brings us back to the question of countries like Switzerland, which are very, er, relaxed when it comes to regulation of foreigners bringing in pots of money to spend in the country.

This is like asking what governments are not corrupt. Power and corruption go hand-in-hand.

Governments (well, some governments) are accountable to the people.

Anyway, obviously this is terrible and pathetic.

Israeli judo star Tal Flicker wins gold in UAE; officials refuse to play anthem (CNN) is what set me off, but this sh**t happens often.

If you agree to host sports events, it's pretty much clear you agree to that. It's a no-brainer.

Refusing to play the anthem is sad because, let's be honest now, the Israeli anthem is one of only a handful that's actually a good tune.

This. If you agree to host the event, you're agreeing to all the rules of the competition - which presumably mentions that the anthem of the winning competitor shall be played.

Yes, why not? I'm against politicizing sports events. They should simply be fun for sports(wo)men and fans.

well, opening up to the part of the world willing to play ball with you racist and misogynistic assholes is a first step.  It's a horrible and embarrassing first step to everyone involved, but it's a first step.

Tunisia (the only full democracy in the Arab world) won't let 7 year old European Chess champion play because...well, you know why

clearly horrible things would happen to the peace loving people of Tunisia if they let this beast into their country Roll Eyes
