500 years.  Without the bold work of Luther and the Reformers, Christianity would be nothing like it is today.  No liberal theology.  No hipster megachurches.  The Bible, forever guarded from the eyes of the peasantry.  All 37 million Christian churches that exist today, under the authority of a single, elderly male volcel in Rome.

Or not.  Because if not Martin Luther, someone else would have come along and done basically the same thing.

In any case, I know we have at least two Lutherans or Lutheran congregants on this board (BRTD and TDAS04) and plenty of Calvinists as well.

How are our Lutheran/Reformed posters observing today?  Is your church actively "celebrating" it?  Are you skipping church to get into the Halloween spirit?  Or is today just an ordinary day for you?

My pastor has spent the last couple of weeks in the Sunday school before the main service teaching church history and the Reformation.  But we don't celebrate Reformation Day in lieu of Halloween or something like that.

Reformation Day is usually only a holiday in the five East German states. For this year only, the remaining states declared it a legal holiday, too, because of the importance of this anniversary.
They now intend to make Reformation Day an official holiday in the whole of Germany via a Bundesrat bill. To declare a day a legal federal holiday, both chambers of parliament have to approve it by a two-third majority, as the Basic law has to be amended.

Note that the Catholic states have way more legal holidays than the Protestant states. For example, the Day of Prayer and Repentance in the middle of November used to be a holiday in Schleswig-Holstein till 1993; now only the Saxons have a free day on that date. Augsburg, Bavaria, on the other hand - a single city !!! - has 14 official holidays. (I have a friend who lives in Augsburg, but works in one of its suburbs and therefore has to work on August 8. Tongue)

Martin Luther would be a good costume for a party today.

I agree. The question is, how much would it look like Luther's Reformation?

My pastor has spent the last couple of weeks in the Sunday school before the main service teaching church history and the Reformation.  But we don't celebrate Reformation Day in lieu of Halloween or something like that.

Wow that's practically identical to my experience.

My church (UCC) only recognized the event with Reformation Sunday on the 29th. Appropriately, we sang A Mighty Fortress as the closing hymn.

As a Catholic, I am personally offended Tongue

But in all seriousness, the Reformation was truly a groundbreaking moment in Christianity that should not be forgotten.
