Christie's Party

With just slightly over two years of experience as a Governor, Chris Christie managed to secure the nomination of a party that had seen itself move aggressively to the right. Despite this, Republican voters picked an abrasive moderate from a "solid Democrat" state.

The path to the nomination wasn't easy for Christie. The governor entered the race late in the summer of 2011 to avoid a conflict with an ally, Governor Mitt Romney. He was brutally attacked by the Tea Party and his much more conservative opponents, including accusations of being a "RINO" by Governor Mike Huckabee and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Despite these attacks, Christie managed to come in a close third place in the Iowa Caucus. Several days later, Christie prevailed in New Hampshire and won by a double-digit margin. During the rest of March, the Governor gained victories in the Northern Mariana Islands, the Virgin Islands, Hawaii, American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Illinois, and an upset in Louisiana.

After losing South Carolina, Christie managed to secure subsequent wins in Florida, Nevada, Colorado, Minnesota, Maine, Arizona, Michigan, and Washington. By the time Super Tuesday arrived, Christie had gained a lead in delegates, while Huckabee, Gingrich, Paul, and Santorum fell behind. That day, Christie won in Alaska, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont, and Virginia.

By April, the nomination was virtually Christie's, with the governor winning sound victories in every primary that month. On April 24, his final opponent, Mike Huckabee, withdrew from the race and endorsed Christie.

Although his conservative opponents gave him fiery endorsements at the convention, Christie remained wary.

"If any of these sons of bitches try to f*** me over so they can run in 2016," Christie told himself, "I'll make sure they lose every election they see."

A Tighter Race
September 7th, 2012

President Barack Obama had hoped to face one of the Republican Party's "radicals" and breeze to reelection, but now he had to face Governor Christie. The president knew that Christie would have a boost in polls following the convention, but due to the governor's advantage of being from a typically Democratic state, the State of New Jersey had consistently been a tossup with Christie.

"I've been president longer than he's been governor," thought Obama, "surely I'll win there in the end."

But it wasn't just New Jersey that the president was worried about, it was nearly every swing state as well. He was trailing in nearly every swing state from Pennsylvania to Nevada.

"Things are gonna be alright, honey" Michelle told him, "I know you'll crush him in the debates."

Presidential Polling Average: Christie +3.4%

Chris Christie / John Cornyn - 158 safe, 48 likely, 130 lean
Barack Obama / Joe Biden - 154 safe, 30 likely, 18 lean

Trouble In The Senate
September 10th, 2012

Senator Bob Menendez found himself in a pickle. New Jersey had always elected Democrats to the Senate since 1978, but in both of his elections, he's had to fight for his career. To make matters worse for the freshman Senator, he now had to contend with a Republican from his home state running for president, making him a target of down-ballot voting.

Menendez faced a rematch with his 2006 rival, State Senator Tom Kean, who began to consistently lead Menendez since the beginning of summer.

"Just two damn seats... and we lose control of the Senate," Menendez told his campaign manager, "And I'm determined as hell to keep the Senate in our control."

It wasn't just Menendez who was fearing for reelection. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee was fighting to keep Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin in Democratic hands, along with taking Indiana and Massachusetts. But, each Senator was valuable as a net loss of one meant that control of the Senate rested on whoever won the presidential race.
