@ the Reagan/Thompson Administration:

BYE FELICIA

How long until the 1980 primaries begin? If Reagan is the Carter analogue, who's the EMK analogue? Who's the Reagan analogue? These burning questions need an answer!

Can we get a whip count of who in the Senate supports conviction on impeachment (or at least impeachment)?
The entire Democratic caucus supports impeachment.

Every Republican thinks Thompson should go, but they're split on whether to support impeachment (which opponents say will hurt Reagan too much before the 1980 election) and forcing him to resign (which opponents say Thompson will absolutely not do and would lead to a bloody floor fight at the convention, while dragging down the entire executive branch of government).

Republicans supporting impeachment:
Lowell Weicker (CT)
Richard Lugar (IN)
John Chafee (RI)
Orrin Hatch (UT)
Robert Stafford (VT)
Nancy Landon Kassebaum (KS)
William Cohen (ME)
Thad Cochran (MS)
Mark Hatfield (OR)
Alan K. Simpson (WY)
Charles Mathias (MD)
Jacob Javits (NY)
Henry Bellmon (OK)
Richard Schweiker (PA)
Jake Garn (UT)

Republicans opposing impeachment:
Ted Stevens (AK)
James McClure (ID)
Bill Roth (DE)
John Danforth (MO)
H. John Heinz (PA)
Malcolm Wallop (WY)
John Warner (VA)
Strom Thurmond (SC)
Pete Domenici (NM)
Howard Baker (TN)
Barry Goldwater (AZ)
Dave Stanley (IA)
Bob Dole (KS)
Paul Laxalt (NV)
William E. Stevens (NC)
Milton Young (ND)
Bob Packwood (OR)

As you can see, it's pretty evenly split. The party is hopelessly divided...not unlike the IRL Democrats in the late 70s.

How long until the 1980 primaries begin? If Reagan is the Carter analogue, who's the EMK analogue? Who's the Reagan analogue? These burning questions need an answer!
Soon. All will be revealed in due time.

It’s also fairly obvious that if an impeachment trial is held, Thompson would be removed from office; Democrats very nearly have the 2/3 Majority alone. The Democrats are enjoying watching Reagan and the GOP squirm, though, and thus are taking time with the investigation.

Any questions before I bring an end to this chapter and start the 1980 election?

Was the Vice President ultimately impeached or did he resign?

The impeachment trial is a major component of the next chapter. So, yes, stubborn Ronnie Thompson didn't resign.

What exactly is going to happen when Reagan loses?  Is the Democrat going to extend the New Deal Alignment another 20 years?

I like how the Alignment philosophy was accepted in the forum as a scientific fact Tongue
I assume that the Reagan loss and RFK's Presidency will just move the country in a much more liberal direction.

I hope Askew and/or Graham are involved in the future of America, as well as Gary Hart

Yes; "big government" isn't seen as a boogeyman as much as it is in real life. The successes of the Kennedy Administration and the failures of the Reagan Administration push the country in a liberal direction until the 21st Century. Think of it like how social democratic parties dominated the politics of Northern European countries for the latter half of the 20th Century and then tapered off in the new millennium. Generally, the American people want a more active government.

Because of the failures of Reagan, the Republican Party also becomes more moderate, similar to how the "New Democrats" took over the party in our 1990s.

I hope Askew and/or Graham are involved in the future of America, as well as Gary Hart
Gary Hart plays a big role in the 1980 election. You may see the other two in a Cabinet Smiley

"With the impeachment of Thompson forthcoming, the anger over the war and the economy and energy, it really wasn't a matter of if Reagan would be reelected. It was a matter of how much he would lose by...and who would defeat him. The Democratic Primary of 1980 might be one of my favorite periods of time in politics, in spite of how it turned out for me."

End Chapter Two

Aw, isolationism again? I wonder how that turned out before and between the World Wars... RIP world if America becomes stubbornly isolationist again Sad
But anyway, this was amazing! I can't wait for the next chapters.
