I support this bill. I think the government has a compelling interest to encourage blood, bone marrow, and organ donations in order to protect vulnerable citizens that need those donations and the ways we go about it here seem like pretty good ideas.

With no objections, Senator Scott is now the sponsor. I invite the Senator to make a statement in favor of the bill.

This legislation is a simple, common sense measure that will promote donation of blood, organs, and bone marrow, and end medically unfound discrimination against gay donors.  The public self-evidently does have an interest in ensuring an abundant supply of healthy organs for people who need them, and I urge my fellow senators to support this bill.

I concur in that I don't see a reason to bar a significant proportion of the population from donating blood - the blood will get screened for potential diseases anyway, won't it?

My question was actually intended to be rhetorical but it's good to have this pointed out one more time.

This bill has enough votes to pass. Senators have 24 hours to change their votes. I am extending the period slightly, in light of the fact that the vote overlaps with Thanksgiving.
