At least in Virginia 2017, Gillespie seemed to get similar numbers to Trump while Northam got the remainder. Does this suggest that Johnson voters will go toward whomever the Democratic nominee is? (It goes without say that Stein voters will largely come home to the Democrat)

I believe so. If Clinton was President, the Libertarians would go Republican, but our incumbent President is a republican hated by most libertarians. Yeah, they'll break for the right democrat for sure.

How many of Johnson's voters were actual libertarians, as opposed to simply voters who were both anti-Clinton and anti-Trump, who saw Johnson as Generic Protest Vote Candidate?

It's really paradox and kind of perverted that many Cruz supporters voted for Johnson.

Rough Guesses, but I'd say about a fifth identify as libertarians, another third don't identify as libertarians, but still believe Johnson would be a good President, and the balance (roughly 47% in this calculation) just wanted to check a protest option, and knew that Johnson was the most popular.
