How different would the 2017 result have been if Christie had resigned over Bridgegate and Guadagno ran in 2017 as an incumbent governor? Would Guadagno have survived or still gone down to defeat as bad as she did Tuesday?

I'd imagine this would be a statewide version of Ford vs Carter (Govt "insider" who helped rebuild over predecessor's scandal vs Well-liked outsider)

Murphy wins by a lesser margain

I agree with this. Also, Trump would still be the President (barring any crazy butterflies set off by Christie's resignation), and New Jerseyans would not likely be rewarding the incumbent WH's party with a gubernatorial victory

When Christie Todd Whitman resigned to become George W. Bush's EPA Administrator, her GOP successor didn't seek a full-term. Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler (R) lost to Jim McGreevey (D) by 15 points. Whitman didn't leave because of a scandal, so had Christie resigned, my guess is Murphy would have won by 20 points.

Phil Murphy/Sheila Oliver D: 50.83%
Kim Guadagno/Carlos Rendo R: 47.02%

I just took the results from the actual 2017 gubernatorial race and added 5% to the republicans and took 5% from the democrats
