Putin likes to use Olympics as his marker for military attacks. At the 2008 Olympics, he had the Ossetians provoke Georgia into an attack & provided the pretext for Russian invasion. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, right after they ended he annexed Crimea & invaded eastern Ukraine soon after. Around the 2016 Olympics was the height of his election meddling. A strange habit, but apprehensive about all Olympics now.
