So it looks like pulling out of this agreement was just pure symbolism for the demagogues on the left and right. I hope they're happy with the damage they've done.

And this does nothing for the USA except cost us thousands of jobs.

Except it doesn't. It just makes things more affordable, gives people more opportunities, and allows us to export more.

Actually most of the jobs were already lost because of trade policies. TPP is really just a giveaway to the corporations to not have to follow rules they don't want to.

There were a ton of flaws in TPP and reasons to be wary, but it's not the type of free trade agreement that would cost the US jobs.

Obviously the U.S. is going to join once Cory Booker is president -- but without having had a say in the process. Thanks, Trump.

Will you still be living in California? I think President Booker will be just fine. Hopefully he takes his big win as a repudiation of Trump's awful trade policies.

tbh, I wouldn't be surprised if Trump is coaxed into a trade agreement very similar to this, seeing as one of the main aims of the TPP was to encircle and isolate China economically, and that's Trump's goal as well.

Trade agreements are not the same thing as free trade as it is a managed alliance. There were a lot of autonomy issues at stake with the TPP that made it unattractive for many libertarians and conservatarians.

Free trade would be removing tariffs and subsidies unilaterally - like Hong Kong for the most part has done.

Just a reminder that without America, it’s absolutely possible that Russia may attempt to enter this trade deal and directly lead it, threatening our leadership throughout the Pacific. Or an ally of theirs, such as India, may be used for Russia to indirectly lead it.

Giving in to pressure from congressional Republicans, Trump has hinted that rejoining the TPP is a 'possibility'.

Good for them. I don't really care what happens with the rebranded TPP as long as the U.S. doesn't enter it.

You don't want American consumers to have more money in their pockets to spend on American goods? Not very patriotic of you... :-p
