I know it's an internal, but Trump at 37-51 in RI is shocking, would expect to see him in the high 20s there.

Race is still Likely D, as internals are unreliable.

I see Gov. GR's popularity is doing her no favors?

Same reason why Dan Malloy is unpopular. The economy in Rhode island and Connecticut has been stagnant since the 90s.

The construction industry that boomed in the 80s because of the good economy at the time came crashing down because of rising interest rates in the 90s that popped the construction bubble of the 80s. Also lots of manufacturing left for overseas.

Then in both states the economy recovered through the service sector only to go into recession in early 2000's and late 2000's.

These two states will likely elect pro-tax cut republicans that have governed the two states during most of the 90s and 00's.

If VT, MA, CT, MD, and RI elect moderate Republican governors while KA, AK, and LA elect (or re-elect) moderate Democrats that would be a rather powerful rebuke of the polarization argument (one I've subscribed to for a while now). Look to these goveror's races in the coming years to be a sign as to either a reversal of present trends or a continued decline towards all-out party warfare.

As for this race, Raimondo is definitely a favorite and is a fairly good governor in her own right. I think she gets too much flak for the state's economy. I could see Fung grabbing 46 or 47%, but it's hard to see an R actually winning this race, particularly in a Trump midterm.

Polarization: This is mostly federal races (Pres, House, Senate). State races can be more easy to distance from national issues, and the "A vote for ____ is a vote for (Ryan, McConnell, Pelosi, or Schumer" argument won't work.

I wouldn't be shocked to see Raimondo lose, but given that it's an internal and Trump seems more popular than one would expect, I wouldn't put too much stock in this poll.

Fung would be the first Asian-American Governor west of Washington, right? And only the second in the contiguous 48.

Well, Jindal and Haley. Unless you don't count us as Asian-Americans, which the census does.

What region does "Asian American" actually refer to?
Is someone from Anatolia or Israel also considered an Asian American?

Usually there's fine print that says "Middle Eastern and North African origin should select 'White'"

So, "Asian American" really means "East Asian American"?
Does "Russian American" only refer to Western Russian or the whole of Russia?

East Asians?

(Also: totally had no idea Haley was Indian-American).

The government's definition of "Asian" encompasses East and South Asia, so they're technically both Asian. However, in American culture, they certainly constitute two very distinct racial identities.

There’s also the fact that South Asia is literally part of Asia.

And so is West Asia/Middle East, but they're counted as white on the Census

It'd be pretty funny if the Republicans won every single gubernatorial race in New England. Especially if it happened at the same time as a Democratic wave.
