I guess the title explains it all if Doug Jones beats Moore in this special election should he be on the VP shortlist for 2020? It makes a lot of sense; he is all but DOA in 2020 anyway so making him VP allows the dem nom to a) cut into any "coastal elitest" argument Trump would on whoever the candidate and b) give southern Dems a seat at the table again

Depends on the top of the ticket. He might be able to work, he's got a southern charm and would be off of an impressive victory in alabama(even with all the moore scandals he's got a tough race). IF he won though it might be better to try and have him win re-election as he would be the only viable path to keep the seat. But a potentially solid vp pick, we'll see how the senate race goes. Other than that he's AG material with or without the senate seat.

I don't see what democrats would gain from it. It's not like he'd put the south in play. Regional bonuses are weak enough for presidential candidates. If he wins, it's because Moore was atrocious, not because he ran an especially good campaign. If democrats wanted a southern VP who can win elections under normal circumstances, John Bell Edwards would make more sense, but I see them picking from the northeast and west coast.

The only "Southern" Democrat I could see on a 2020 ticket would be Roy Cooper.

Is there anything "old school Southern Democrat" about Jones?  Any folksy demeanor?  Is he culturally conservative in any way?  Any social conservatism to speak of?  Or is he just a liberal Democrat who happens to be from Alabama?

I think he's somewhat pro-gun. Don't know that there's anything other than that.

No.  Doug Jones is pretty much a standard liberal Democrat like those that get elected in Illinois or Maryland.  He's even come out in support of Bernie's "Medicare for All" idea, IIRC.

So, it will be absolutely hilarious when Alabama elects him to the U.S. Senate and he fits pretty squarely in the middle of the current Democratic caucus.

I was wondering when the "Doug Jones 2020" speculation would begin.

No, but he should be near the top of any Democratic AG shortlist.

No.
If he wins, it will be seen, correctly, as a fluke, not the kind of asset of proven-vote-getter that needs to be present for a spot on a national ticket.

If Jones wins a full term in 2020, THEN he has that kind of asset.

Absolutely not.

If the Dems want a Southerner on the ticket so badly, John Bel Edwards, Ralph Northam, or Roy Cooper are their best bets.

It'd be cute, but I'd prefer the Democratic running mate be someone who can run down the road.

Also don't know why people are forgetting that Sally Yates exists when it comes to discussion of the next Democratic AG.

NO! The upside is very small and it would infuriate the jfern-segment that we desperately need.

No, he shouldn't be.

He would be a contender for AG though.
