Franken 2020 is over. Maybe an alternative election, but never.

He probably wasn't going to run anyway.  Other than coming out with a book this year, he wasn't dropping any hints of interest, like the other contenders have been.  Yesterday, I would have put the probability of him running at ~15% or so.  Maybe 20% if I'm generous?  Now it's 0%, of course.

I guess his probability of running dropping to zero improves the chances of Klobuchar running a bit.

He shouldn't resign because of sexual harassment. He didn't rape anyone. He apologized, he learns from it and move on. He's not Roy Moore.

This, but as my current display name implies (and as others have mentioned elsewhere), Swanson would probably get the nod if Franken were to resign.

As I said above, I didn't think he was going to run for prez anyway, but even if not, he might have been a contender for VP.  That's obviously no longer the case...

I actually agree with this, but mostly because Ellison is better in the House and isn't a great fit for all of Minnesota.

Ellison won't be appointed if he resigns. Dayton will either appoint Swanson or a seat warmer (likely his Lt. Governor or former LG)

It'll probably unleash an avalanche on the rest of congress.

This. Any predictions I make about the future of politics that will matter a lot... The generation from Franken on, sexual harassment allegations everywhere. My generation will go through old social media posts. But I predict Franken won't be the last.

We're going to have fifty Senate seats up next year.

But how much of the rest of Congress has sexually harassed someone?

This is great news for 2020: a Franken candidacy could swing the Deplorable vote away from Trump and fire Democrats to victory.

I agree 100%, and I was a huge Franken fan until all of this broke. I think Lori Swanson, the Attorney General of Minnesota would be another good choice for Franken's seat.

Why can't these people just keep their hands to themselves? Is the end of your political/entertainment career really worth it?

Such people never believe they're going to be caught or punished for their actions.

When you live with that idea as a constant presence in your life, it is absurdly easy to disregard numerous personality and behavioral blemishes.

By all means, appoint Ellison. That would certainly improve the GOP's chances of taking the seat. Whether he resigns or not, ambitious politicians in MN should be getting ready for a shot at the Senate soon enough. He won't run for reelection.

If these scandals keep breaking (supposedly there was a fund that paid out thousands if not millions in hush money to victims of Congressmen from both parties), we may finally get some turnover, at the cost of what little respect people still have for Congress. A Moore election won't help, but a defeat for him could also lead to an epidemic of allegations being saved until it's just a little too late to change the candidate on the ballot. Just when people thought politics could get no uglier.
