Continuing the Rock Hall series with a first time nominee, Kate Bush.

It's very odd for the Hall to choose someone who is more popular in another country. She is a major inspiration to many who came after her, particularly other female singer songwriters that came after her.

The Hall has an affinity for singer songwriters (Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Donovan, Cat Stevens, Randy Newman, and Laura Nyro have all been inducted relatively recently.), but does the Atlas?

Recently I've really fallen for "Moving" and "Strange Phenomenon" from that same first album The Kick Inside. Her live concerts from 1979 were excellent. I do like her Fairlight 80's albums a lot but there's something about that first album that I keep going back to. I am glad Gilmour and the others saw her talent. I'd say her debut in '78 is better than another celebrated Artist under 20 who debuted in the same year who like her would see her biggest recognition globally in the 80's.

And Joan Baez last year.

The greatest female singer songwriter imo. (Although granted I haven't listened enough to Bjork to count get out)

Why even have to qualify her thus? Or worse call her a "female Peter Gabriel".

Her music is too soft and wimpy for me.  :-/

Freedom singer

But I've got a few questions:
What does the red mean? Wink

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green
You had a temper like my jealousy
Too hot, too greedy
How could you leave me
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you, I loved you too

[Pre-Chorus 1]
Bad dreams in the night
They told me I was going to lose the fight
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights.

[Chorus]
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy
Come home, I'm so cold
Let me in-a-your window
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy
Come home, I'm so cold
Let me in-a-your window

  • I can't find the word wiley in any dictionary. Is it a lyrical, old-fashioned adjective?
  • Wuthering Heights is the name of the manor where Catherine and Heathcliff live. But as it also used as an adjective in the lyrics, does it also have a certain meaning?
  • Last, but not least: "in-a-your". Is that even a word? Or did anybody just mishear the lyrics and tried to express what they heard? And the mistake was copied and repeated again and again on every lyric site and lyric video? The oldest source I could find was a free lyric site from 2005. Hence, it is possible that it is a mistake that went viral and survived in such a way as to be commonly mistaken as the truth...

I'd guess Patti Smith is the universally viewed greatest, but I prefer PJ Harvey ahead of both.  Kate is still a FM

wiley is most likely wily making the setting elusive like the protagonist.

Wuthering refers to being expose to stormy weather with the relationship being the stormy weather.

in-a-your window is probably just the signing adding an extra syllable (the a).  Heathcliff is shutting her out of his life and she wants in, via the window.

Thank you for your answers! Two of three I even understand. Tongue
That reminds me of my high school time where we had to interpret dramas and poems in English exams, for which we were allowed monolingual dictionaries, which was of no advantage to us as many old-fashioned and lyrical words weren't listed. Undecided
