Right now, New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez is among the least popular governors and is now polling approximately below 40 %.

Why is she so unpopular? Is it because of controversies relied to her leadership or is it because she did not endorse Donald Trump in the 2016 election?

This is more likely to help her than hurt her, in New Mexico.

I remember when she was considered a female presidential candidate along with Ayotte, and Haley. The trio. Looks like Nikki is the last one standing.

Martinez was never going to run for President.

Corruption. Also, being a mean inept person is something that won't go unexposed for too long.

New Mexico is still a very poor state with a lot of crime and drug problems. Outside of the Southeastern corner of the state (basically an extension of West Texas cattle grazing operations) and the state doesn't really have the same conservative streak that the Deep South (which has a lot of the same issues) has. So, Martinez (under whom the state hasn't really recovered from the Recession at all) is not going to be popular there.

I said she was considered a potential candidate.

There was an incident in December, 2015, where Martinez attended a party at a hotel where police were called because of some rowdy behavior.  Some law enforcement officer described Martinez as "inebriated", which she denied, but the publicity was negative.

She's not hopelessly under water, and could POSSIBLY be elected statewide in New Mexico still, but it would require the Democrat to be a really lame candidate.

Not endorsing Trump was a big misstep.  Had she endorsed Trump, she could have been one of Trump's leading Hispanic spokespersons, and gained real influence.  I'm also not sure that would have hurt in New Mexico quite as much as folks think it would.

New Mexico has always suffered in comparison to Arizona.  Arizona is growing, vibrant, and thriving.  New Mexico is not.  Albequerque is not Phoenix.  That's not Martinez's fault, but, as others have pointed out, she hasn't really moved the needle.

Arizona has the benefit of being a convenient place for Californians to relocate/retire/go to college and having a pipeline of people coming from there.

New Mexico does not occupy a comparable position for people in Texas.

She's also implicated in a massive public pension fraud scheme

Most of those California retirees are conservatives tired of the leftward direction Cali is going though.

She's seen as incompetent, out of touch, and spiteful. She's not a very good retail politician.
