Was commanding general in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968 and the architect of the (mainly) failed military strategy during that period. Later he became Chief of Staff to the Army until 1972 with virtually no influence. Later he blamed LBJ for his failed strategy and lost the Republican primary for Governor of South Carolina in 1974.
