Here I post a table showing the ideology of the governments of the developed countries from 1950 to 2017. Each square represents one year in each country. Red is left, blue is right, purple is divided. I used purple for grand coalitions, like the ones in Germany and Italy, cohabitation in France, and, in the USA, when the party which has the majority in both houses is not the party of the president. If the party of the president has the majority in at least one of the houses, I used the Atlas color of the party of the president

Conclusions
There was a lot of blue in the 1950s (except in the Nordic countries) and in the 2010s
There was a lot of red in the late 1970s and in the late 1990s
UK and Germany are very cyclical, Spain and Australia are countercyclical
There was a myth that the 1980s was a very blue decade because of the superpowers USA, UK and Germany. But there was a lot of red in the Southern Europe and in the Nordic countries

In 1981-1986 and 2011-2014, the party of the president had the majority in the Senate. I could have used a purple more blue than red for 1981-1986 and a purple more red than blue for 2011-2014, but it would become too complicated

Is this for just the bulk of the year?
