We've only had one such period for either party since the 1970s (2003-2007), and that wouldn't have happened if not for the truly unusual 2002 mid-terms. Republicans have a chance to hold both houses in 2018 only because of their huge advantage with both maps. I think it will probably be a long, long time before Democrats are able to keep unified control for more than 2 years.
