Joe Barton (R-TX), “who apologized for a lewd photo of him that circulated on the Internet, told a woman to whom he had sent sexually explicit photos, videos and messages that he would report her to the Capitol Police because she could expose his behavior,” according to a recording reviewed by the Washington Post.

“The woman described encounters and contact spanning a five-year period that began online after she posted a message on Barton’s Facebook page in 2011, leading to the sexually explicit exchanges and ultimately a pair of physical sexual encounters in Washington and Texas. Over time, she said, she became aware of and corresponded with multiple other women who engaged in relationships with Barton, who represents a suburban Dallas district and is one of the most senior Republicans in the House.”

I don't see Barton did anything wrong here, other than show poor judgment as a congressman by sending the picture, and it's embarrassing that the WaPo is promoting this as a new scandal.

As much as I'd like Barton to leave, this isn't resignation worthy.

Maybe if all the Congresswomen start mocking his penis and turning him into an office laughingstock, he'll leave on his own.

TX-06 is probably going to be a tougher district after the next redistricting, anyway. If they drop Navarro County out of it, which they probably would have to do given how fast southwest Tarrant County is growing, it'd be a GOP-leaning swing seat rather than a safe seat.

In all fairness to Barton, it doesn't sound at all from that conversation like he was trying to blackmail this woman. On the contrary, threatening to call the police is a totally reasonable response if she was threatening to blackmail him with the affair or with the nude photos. Not sure about D.C., but I know Texas now has a law against revenge porn.

Ya if this was a female Democratic congresswoman the WaPo would be treating her as a martyr.

Of course he should call the police if a woman blackmails him or threatens to publicly expose his photographs sent to a consensual partner. Why should congressman or women not be able to send nude photos to their significant others, and why should the law in Texas against revenge porn not be applicable simply because the perpetrator is female and the victim is an overweight GOP congressman?

If it was all consentual(which is definitely not a given) then he didn't do anything wrong from what I can tell.

Barton’s politics are abhorrent, but all of the activities appear to have happened between consenting adults, and ultimately  this is really just body-shaming. To lump this in with MeToo and Weinsteining (both of which are necessary) trivializes real issues and makes it harder for actual victims of sexual hatrassment and assault to come forward.
