American taxpayers built the internet. Dropped 400 billion for infrastructure that the private companies never bothered to finish. Why should we let them own it and restrict it?

I support government regulations on the internet for fairness (net neutrality), however outright government control gives them the ability to censor it like they do in China, which is not worth the risk.

It absolutely should be, like any other public utility.

I agree it would be a good idea in theory, but government-controlled internet in practice gives the gov the ability to monitor us without going through the middleman of telecom companies.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This -the last thing I want to see is an American 'Great Cyber-Wall' which is what nationalization would open the door to.

I'd prefer significant new regulations to restrict telecoms from abusing the internet for profit, such as on data caps, which exist despite absolutely no need to have caps (except to squeeze money out of people), full net neutrality rules, price controls, line-sharing to increase competition, and easing local regulations that make it hard to expand network infrastructure in the first place.

As it stands now, telecoms have no leg to stand on when they talk about government regulation. There is a reason people hate companies like Comcast with a passion. These companies have been getting almost everything they've wanted up until Wheeler came along near the end of the Obama presidency. They have been milking Americans for everything they have while taking hundreds of millions of tax dollars and doing almost nothing with it. It's about time the tides have shifted. These corporations will still make a profit even in a vastly more regulated landscape, they just won't be pillaging America and making money hand over fist.

How about we roll back those rules that make us hate the cable companies and ISPs instead of the hamfisted act of nationalizing the internet (whatever the hell that would even mean).

Complete government control of internet? Doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

Corporations want only the best for us, and the only reason they don't give it to us is because Big Bad Guvment won't let them! Sad Sad Sad

We shouldn't, but I'm not sure that it should be directly run by the Feds either. Turn it into a utility, and let municipalities and states handle it. (And smack down greedy corporate meddling to wreck it so that they can profit later as hard as possible.)

I don't want the government telling me when I can and can't jerk it, so no. In the same breath this is also why I support net neutrality.

This is more equivalent to the BBC being the only channel in the UK, which it isn't. And the exact same net neutrality issues would exist with the government being able to control access to sites.

1 public broadcaster =/= complete government control of the internet. Seriously, democracies can take very nasty authoritarian turns and literally having the government own the internet in that situation would be very dangerous. I don't want people like Maduro, Trump, Kaczynski and Orban in charge of my internet.

So, I was out with a friend on Saturday - and he was trying to assure me that the internet in Switzerland is actually "nationalised" in a way. I didn't believe this because, although state owned Swisscom are the majority player - there are private providers like Salt and Sunrise.

Anyway, his explanation was, the actual internet infrastructure is owned by Swisscom, ie the state, and the private ISPs have to rent it out to provide their services (like National Rail and the franchises in the UK railway system). So, the infrastructure is state owned; and the majority market share ISP is also state owned (LOL "libertarian" Switzerland).

Anyway, to cut a long story short - I have never noticed any mass censorship of the internet. Although, what is this "facebook" everybody keeps talking about?
