Better than her old party, I guess? Because it's ostensibly more moderate. Still a horrible party.

So this is kind of an equivalent to Haider's BZO?  (a party leader takes a right-liberal party in a more nationalist, anti-immigrant direction, but then gets replaced by someone even more radical and so they start their own party as a relatively moderate alternative)

Its founding is ironic:

Petry believed that the party she had moved much further to the right was too extremist, so she made her own party, which is what the AfD’s founder did.

But yes, as others have said, it’s better than the AfD.

HP; hoping for snap elections so Petry will lose her seat. It's incredible how closely the events concerning its founding mimic the split of the Finns Party earlier in the year, with the more moderate faction here also founding a new party called "Blue Reform" (they wish to be referred to as "the Blues" for short) after losing a leadership election.

Seems to be less bad than AfD.

I thought it was meant to be understood as "The Drunk Party". I was quite disappointed to discover that this was not the case.

It was a stupid move to split AfD despite very real divides within the party on economic issues. I doubt it will reach the threshold for representation. Petry was lined up for real relevance and gave it away just like Lucke did when she took over the party. Ironic. I suspect that this party will either never be relevant or hang around for a while weakening AfD until they reunite, as happened with BZO and FPO in Austria. Petry isn't as compelling as Haider was though.

I realize it would heighten the irony, but why doesn't she join up with her former foe Lucke and the ex-AfD MEPs in the Liberal-Conservative Reformers?

HP; hoping for snap elections so Petry will lose her seat. It's incredible how closely the events concerning its founding mimic the split of the Finns Party earlier in the year, with the more moderate faction here also founding a new party called "Blue Reform" (they wish to be referred to as "the Blues" for short) after losing a leadership election.
Some similarities, but also some differences:

1. People voted for the new leadership of AfD, whereas Finnish PS voters voted for a PS with the old leadership.
2. On the other hand, Frauke Petry has her own mandate by winning a direct seat. By contrast, the PS members of the government's behavior in government does not reflect what their voters voted for. This would make Petry's action more legitimate.

But most importantly:

3. The Finnish splitoff is genuinely really moderate. While Petry isn't Gauland, she simply is not a moderate. The intra-AfD conflict is more about clashing personalities.
4. Gauland is basically a Nazi. By contrast, Jussi Halla-aho is a mega FF. This makes it more legitimate for Petry to split off than for Soini cum suis.

Therefore, a hesitant FF vote for Petry (while the Finnish secessionists are mega HPs).
