What would have happened if instead of Donald Trump running for president against the other 16 republicans Newt Gingrich ran instead. Basically everything's the same except instead of Donald Trump running it would be Newt Gingrich. One would have have won the nomination and if he won the nomination would he have beaten Clinton/Kaine in the general election?

I feel like he definitely would have lost the nomination, but not to Cruz or Kasich. I'm feeling either Christie, Paul, or Rubio gets the nomination, and that Rubio and maaaaaybe Paul could win the general. Gingrich gets Secretary of State if a Republican wins.

There's  no way Newt wins IA or NH so that means he wont win the nomination

He wouldn't win the nomination, but if he would have, he would've lost the election - probably handily.
