Though I believe that there is only one true religion, I recognize that other religions often teach good moral values and can have a positive effect on society.  Scientology is not one of them.

Nothing inherently wrong with any belief system, and some of Hubbard’s writings are interesting (even if plagiarized, that’s more of a reflection on the man than on his words). But I find it difficult to believe his teachings have done much good for society.

The Church of Scientology is an evil institution. I can respect the gumption of “freezone Scientologists” who study the philosophy and teachings outside of the official organization even if I disagree with their practices, but the institutionalized arm of the “religion” is morally and socially bankrupt.

Above. Their beliefs are not that much more out there than 'respectable' religions, but their organization is one of the worst organized religions in the world.

I mean, clearly they are horrible, but they have raped hundreds of thousands of children over the centuries?  Do people routinely murder in the name of the religion?  (and I don't mean secretly murdering people that piss off the religion, I mean shouting the name of your deity before committing horrible acts against as many random people as you can.  Obviously secretly murdering specific people is a horrible thing, but it's not the same.)  Do they light their religious symbols on fire in the front yards of people that don't look like them?
