Parliamentary Elections, 1987

The first snap election in Lamarnan history was caused by the Social Democrats leaving the government over labor union reform. Read more about the Bellson government here.

Liberal

PM Bellson has stated that his record speaks for itself - the economic recovery, domestic reforms, alliance with the United States - and would warrant a second government with the Liberals at the helm. Bellson has stated he wants to severely curtail the power of the labor unions, establish dumping regulations, and purchase arms production licenses from the United States. He also supports the construction of a U.S. naval base.

Progressive

The former Foreign Minister-turned-Prime Minister-turned Foreign Minister has explained that she is the one responsible for the warm relations with the United States. However, her party opposes the construction of a naval base, and has criticized Bellson for his lack of social liberalism despite having had two socially liberal parties in his government. The party does support union reform, as well as the expansion of the UBI to £400 per adult a month.

The Left - O' Matui

A permanent version of the Labor-Ta' Lāmla Alliance, The Left is led by Ta' Lāmla's leader, Jacob Onamlee. The party calls for a reversal of course for the nation, wanting to strengthen labor laws, rip up free trade deals, nationalize the healthcare, transportation, and utilities industries, and begin to provide public housing, free healthcare and education. It also calls for higher taxes on the rich, removing the US airbase and opposing a naval base. Once again, the party calls social issues unimportant in comparison to "the horrific economic inequality and issues that our nation faces." IT states that the economic recovery isn't as great as it seems, specifically about the accumulation of wealth by the nation's wealthiest. It also applauds Gorbachev's moves towards democratization and transparency in the Soviet Union.

Social Democrats

Mendelssohn has earned some cred for standing for her party's values and collapsing the government. She claims that the Liberal's latest goal was a step too far, and that her party proposes a much stronger and equitable future for the country than the Liberals or the Left: it calls for expanding welfare and a single-payer scheme, paid maternity and sick leave, opposing the US Naval base and increasing the future rent for the US airbase. Additionally, Mendelssohn also supports Gorbachev's democratization efforts, and hopes Lamarna can be a mediator between the world's two superpowers.

Justice

Edward Stamer, the new leader of the Justice Party, has stated that the recent tax cuts have been a disaster, and calls for retroactive taxation of foreign companies, an increase in the tax rate for the wealthy, a repeal of trade deals in favor of tariffs, and a repeal of the abortion law. Stamer also suggests that an embargo of the United States is possible until nuclear reparations are given. However, unlike Kim Miller, Stamer wants to reduce the national debt instead of sponsoring a significant welfare state. Stamer also suggests that seizing the US airbase via military means could be a last-resort measure for guaranteeing nuclear reparations.

People's

Harry Campbell, recently elected People's Party leader, has stated that his sole goals are to establish a moratorium on immigration and to reverse the Mālno schooling referendum decision.

Constituency Ballot instructions:

Select one constituency from above - consult the master thread if you need - and select a party (Union is contesting the constituency results) or a fictional independent you invent to support. Comment your choice.

This will increase the chance of that party winning the seat by 10% or 15% [I haven't decided yet. *shrug*]. However, parties are obviously not equally competitive in all seats. For example, The Left has a 75% chance of winning Morganville North. The 10/15% will be taken equally from the other parties' chances.

Interesting how quickly we’ve devolved to (basically) a two party system - maybe more akin to Australia, with buddy parties in Social Democrats and Progressive.

It may just be that the left is unifying now that the right is in power.

The election of 1987 was marked by a unique trend towards a two-party system, perhaps spurned on by the creation of the first-past-the-post constituencies and the Left union. The campaign ended up focusing on the question of the alliance with the United States, with the Left taking a much harder anti-USA stand than usual.

Both the Liberals and the Left received the highest proportion of votes in electoral history, and together won 35 of the 41 constituencies. The Left swept the Southern Islands, while the Liberals performed strongly in the capital metro.

After results were certified, no party reached a majority by itself. The Social Democrats announced they will not serve in government with either the Left or the Liberals due to irreconcilable differences on foreign policy and economics, respectively. This meant that Jacob Onamlee could not form a majority government. The Prime Minister couldn't form a majority either, even with the support of the Progressive and People's parties, who did not reject a coalition with the Liberals. However, because neither alliance could form a majority, a grand coalition seemed to be the only possible option. However, both leaders ridiculed the idea.

The Left first received the mandate to form a government, but failed. The Prime Minister received the mandate next, once again failing to form a majority government.

For several weeks the fate of the nation was uncertain. However, after several rounds of negotiations, the Social Democrats finally agreed to give confidence and supply to a Liberal-Progressive-People's coalition, while voting only for matters they agree with the government.

Jacob Onamlee called Shelley Mendelssohn "a traitor to the cause of the left."

The Prime Minister was sworn in for a second term by President Tanno Lalleé.
